Our Favorite Time of the Year.

December is a fun month at ABC - filled with lights, trees, bells, and elves!

For our first December show and tell, the kids brought in Christmas things:

an advent calendar,

a favorite ornament,

a snow globe,

a harmonica for playing carols,

a who can forget little singing critters?

Teacher Time.

Now it's time to learn a little more about another one of our wonderful teachers!

Ms. Robin

1.       Where are you from?

Outer space, haha.  Actually, Berea, Ohio

2.       Family? Pets?

I’m married and have 3 children ages: 16, 13, and 11.  We have a zoo: 2 dogs,  1 cat, and yes, 2 rats.

3.       Education?

High school grad with 2 years of college

4.       Favorite color?

Reds and Pinks

5.       Favorite dessert?

Pudding type desserts

6.       Favorite season or holiday and why?

Fall – the colors of fall are beautiful.

7.       Hobbies?

I enjoy being outside and watching my kids’ sporting events.

8.       Favorite book/tv show/ movie/music?

G.M.A. junkie.  I like "Ever After" and "50 First Dates".  I like 80’s classics.

9.       Favorite part of teaching?

Crafts, of course, and seeing how the kids develop from the beginning to the end of the year.

Halloween time.

"Entering the web of learning"

The students loved doing Halloween activities.

The kindergarten class talked about what costumes they would wear.

The preschool students made jack o' lantern windsocks.

The TK class practiced their math skills with candy corn.

This fall, ABC School went to a corn maze for a field trip.

We took a hayride to the maze.

These boys teamed up and made it through the maze in record time.

After the maze everyone took a ride on the cow train.

Everyone got to pick their own pumpkin.

This little sweetie couldn't decide which pumpkin to pick.

Pumpkins are the best.

We're farmers!

All of the kids loved seeing all of the farm animals.

The corn shed was one of the best parts of the trip.

The kids loved jumping and rolling around in the corn kernels.

After the corn shed, we went to race rubber ducks.

The kids pumped water and raced their ducks to the other side.

Pumping water is hard work.

Everyone had the best time!

Teacher Time.

Ms. Linda

It's time for another Teacher Time, when we sit down with one of the wonderful ABC teachers and learn a little more about them.  It's Ms. Linda's turn!

1.       Where are you from?    

Dayton, Ohio

2.       Family? Pets? 

I have three sons: 25, 22, 18 and I’m a new “empty-nester”.  I also have a poodle named Cleetis.  (The boys named him!)

3.       Education?

My undergraduate degree is from the University of Colorado in Boulder.  My graduate degree is from the University of Denver.

4.       Favorite color?

Purple!

5.       Favorite dessert?

Creme Brulee

6.       Favorite season or holiday and why?

Christmas – I love the family time and since I am from a very large family (9 children), it is a time to be with them.

7.       Favorite book/tv show/ movie/music?

I  like Bachelor/Dancing with the Stars, Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice.  I like any love story movie, and I listen to country music.

8.       Favorite part of teaching?

 I love being an SLP – everyday is different, I never get bored.  The smiles on the children’s faces light me up.  I love watching their progress, although I cry when they leave us (every time)!

October Pizza Night

Tonight ABC School had another fun Family Night. 

Ms. Linda answered several questions and shared

many helpful suggestions for working with the students at home:

1. Be concise with your language or directives.
2. Non-verbal language is "louder" than verbal language.
3. Using visuals (pictures, gestures, signs) may help the child to better comprehend.
4. Stick to your word; don't give in.
5. Consistency is key - make sure all adults are giving the same messages.
6. Structure and routines are important to follow, as they serve to comfort the child.
7. Be mindful that transitions, changes in routines/schedules, or surprises may upset the child.
8. Know what motivates the child and use it as reinforcement.
9. Be positive.
10. Remember to have fun with them - they are, after all, just children!

This week's Show and Tell was all about autumn.

Show and Tell: Apples

Today the students had their first Show and Tell of the school year. Each Friday the students will be able to bring in something that relates to the week's theme. Then the kids will share with their classmates during circle time. Show and Tell is a fun way to practice speech and social skills.

This week's theme was "All About Apples."

OT is "OK" with us!

The students love when Ms. Sharon comes every week for OT (occupational therapy).  Ms. Sharon helps the students participate to their fullest in all areas of school, whether it be using a special pencil to help with fine motor skills, or using a "bumpy" cushion on a school chair to help with the wiggles.  Ms. Sharon also works with the students on their gross motor skills, like running, crawling, and jumping.
